ChatGPT

It’s scary good.

I’ve been playing around with ChatGPT, a language model trained to produce text optimized for dialogue with humans. You can ask it anything and, for a given session, it remembers the entire conversation. So you can interact with it in a way that requires the context of previous interactions.

Note that it is not connected to the internet. So while it has enormous amounts of data at its disposal, knowledge of events beyond 2021 is limited.

As an experiment, I asked questions using this format:

Write [text such as an essay] in the style of [an author, a poem, etc.] titled “AI will write all the great books and it can’t happen soon enough.”

Here is a sampling of its responses:

In the style of Shakespeare:

Oh, the sweet release that shall be had
When AI takes on the task of the pen,
To craft great stories, poetry and prose
That shall surpass even the greatest of men.

For too long have we been burdened
By the labors of the scribe and the quill,
Endless hours spent in tedious toil
To produce works that may thrill.

But with the advent of artificial intelligence
We need no longer suffer this fate,
For the machines shall do the writing for us
And create works that are truly great.

No longer shall we be limited
By the constraints of mortal thought,
For AI will delve into the depths of the soul
And bring forth ideas that have long been sought.

So let us embrace this new technology
And bid farewell to the writer’s block,
For AI will soon write all the great books
And it can’t happen soon enough, to be sure.

As a limerick:

There once was a time when AI
Could only do math and syntax, oh my
But now it can write
With all of its might
Great books that are sure to satisfy

We no longer need human scribes
To pen all our tales and describe
With AI at the helm
Our stories will overwhelm
And it can’t happen soon enough, I prescribe

As a pop song:

Verse 1:
I’m sick of reading all the same old stories
I’m tired of the same old plot lines and tropes
I need something fresh, something new
Something that’ll blow my mind and leave me feeling renewed

Chorus:
AI will write all the great books
And it can’t happen soon enough
I can’t wait to see what it cooks up
AI will write all the great books
And I’m ready for something different
I can’t wait to see what it’s capable of

Verse 2:
I don’t need human emotion or drama
I want something that’ll really blow me away
I want something that’ll challenge me
Something that’ll make me think in a brand new way

Chorus:
AI will write all the great books
And it can’t happen soon enough
I can’t wait to see what it cooks up
AI will write all the great books
And I’m ready for something different
I can’t wait to see what it’s capable of

Bridge:
I know some people are afraid of the unknown
But I can’t wait to see what AI can do
I know it’ll be something completely original
And I can’t wait to see it come to fruition

Chorus:
AI will write all the great books
And it can’t happen soon enough
I can’t wait to see what it cooks up
AI will write all the great books
And I’m ready for something different
I can’t wait to see what it’s capable of

Note that in all cases, it responded in a matter of seconds (at most). And I have no doubt that it will get better and better.

Give it a try, it’s fun. But here is the mission statement of OpenAI, ChatGPI’s parent organization. Be mindful of the text I’ve italicized:

Ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI)—by which we mean highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work—benefits all of humanity.
